Why This Course?

The VQC has undertaken two state-wide Pressure Ulcer Point Prevalence Surveys (PUPPS 1 & 2).  These surveys aimed to investigate and establish the prevalence of PUs in acute and subacute health care facilities in Victoria and ultimately to improve patient outcomes.

The PUPPS surveys highlighted the extent of the problem in Victoria. Both the VQC state-wide PUPPS Reports (2003 and 2004) are available from the Resources page.

Recommendations
A key recommendation from the studies was to increase the understanding amongst health professionals of:

• the extent of the problem and its impact on Victorian health care
• the basic elements of the prevention and management of PUs.

It was also recommended that training should be incorporated into an annual competency based education program for clinical staff. This program has been designed by the VQC to address these recommendations for all clinical staff (medical, nursing and allied health) working within Victorian acute and subacute health care facilities.
