Limitations of Standardised Tools

There are a number of limitations associated with the use of a standardised RA tool.

These limitations are:

  • inability to assess all risk factors
  • health professionals can become over-reliant on them and not take into account broader clinical risk factors
  • variable levels of validity and reliability.

There are a variety of RA tools available. The most common used in Australia are:

  • Braden Scale for Predicting Pressure Sore Risk
  • Waterlow Pressure Sore Prevention/Treatment Policy
  • Norton Risk Assessment Score.
