Wound Pain

In order to effectively manage wound pain, you need to assess the pain.

You need to determine if the pain is due to infection, dressing removal, allergy to dressings, anxiety, etc. You also need to plan pain management around wound care and be cognisant of patients who have reduced sensation, i.e. neuropathy.

Monitor, document and communicate.
The progress of the wound needs to be closely monitored, accurately documented and discussed with team members, the patient and/or carer.

The ulcer ideally should be photographed on a regular basis to monitor healing on a more objective basis.
