Estimate of PU cases
It is estimated that 60,000 people a year acquire a PU in Australian health care organisations.  (Porter A & Cooter R, 1999)

Patient’s quality of life
A study of patients with spinal injuries showed that their quality of life deteriorated considerably once they had developed a PU. They felt disempowered and many felt that life was no longer worth living. (Wellard S 2001)

Costs in Victoria
PUPPs 2 found that in Victoria patients with PUs remain in hospital for 50% longer than patients without PUs. This increased length of stay accounts for 44,406 bed-days per annum.

Medical negligence
Claims of medical negligence against individuals or organisations who have failed to prevent the development of PUs have been common for some time in both the United States and the United Kingdom.  Although this trend has not occurred to the same extent in Australia, one example of litigious action in favour of the complainant has been successfully brought at a cost of $630,000.  In addition, evidence suggests that many cases are settled out of court, resulting in large payouts that are not disclosed.  (Nelson T, 2003)
