Pressure ulcer education package

Welcome

In 2003, the Victorian Quality Council (VQC) conducted the Pressure Ulcer Point Prevalence Survey (PUPPS), the first state-wide survey of the prevalence of pressure ulcers within Victoria’s acute and subacute health services. The VQC PUPPS Report recommended that staff education in pressure ulcer basics should be undertaken. A second survey conducted in 2004 aimed to establish the state-wide prevalence of pressure ulcers in acute and subacute public health services, and to track the level of improvement in pressure ulcer prevention and management, through the implementation of key recommendations from the first survey.

The VQC approved the development of a competency program, based on the education sessions used in the PUPPS project, and the online education package Pressure Ulcer Basics (PUBs) was developed for use by all clinicians.

Following evaluation of the PUBs package, the VQC approved the development of a second online education package: Pressure Ulcer Basics for residential aged care workers. This package has been developed for use by Certificate III and IV workers in residential aged care settings.

The packages were developed with input from a number of experts, including members of the Australian Wound Management Association (AWMA). The evidence base for the program was the AWMA Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Prediction and Prevention of Pressure Ulcers 2001.
