Who needs to know about pressure area prevention?

A number of people need to know about pressure areas. The more people know about pressure areas, the greater the reduction in risk to residents of pressure areas developing.

People who need to know about pressure areas are:

  • Residents. All residents should be informed about how to prevent pressure areas occurring, and how to recognise early warning signs that a pressure area is developing.
  • Family, friends and representatives of residents. Information about pressure areas will help them to assist residents to sit and lie comfortably, buy footwear and clothing that is safe and buy skin care products that will reduce the risk of a pressure area developing. If a pressure area does occur, they need to be kept informed of any further development, and progress of treatment.
  • Residential aged care service staff. Staff need to know how pressure areas can be avoided, and how they can be managed if they do develop.
