Why is it important to learn about pressure areas?
It is part of our work in an aged care service to recognise when residents are at risk of developing pressure areas, and to take steps to ensure they stay free of these and any subsequent problems that may occur.
Apart from causing pain and discomfort, the pressure area may develop into a pressure ulcer. Other complications such as reduced quality of life, infections and premature death are then a risk. Pressure ulcers are an internationally recognised patient safety problem and are largely preventable. In addition we need to recognise that the resident’s family, friends and carers may also experience distress.
