Tom develops a pressure area
Tom received a new pair of slippers as a gift from his granddaughter for his 87th birthday. For the following four days he wore the slippers. He proudly told everyone that his granddaughter had chosen them because they were his favourite colour. He also added that though the slippers were a little too small and his feet were sore, he didn’t want to disappoint her, so continued to wear them. Tom developed pressure areas on his feet which needed to be treated. Ellen, the service’s podiatrist, visited Tom to discuss appropriate footwear for him. She suggested that Tom talk to his family about his footwear needs and explained that as people get older their feet change shape. They need footwear that has extra width and depth as well as extra space for their toes. As Tom rarely went shopping he was concerned that his next slippers would cause problems, because he wouldn’t be at the shoe store to try them on. Ellen had a hint for Tom — she suggested that someone trace the outline of his feet onto cardboard. Whoever was shopping for Tom’s shoes could use this as a guide for size, as long as they checked there was plenty of room for his toes. She also suggested that Tom get some comfortable socks, not tight and without seams, so there were no places where the socks would rub his feet and toes. |
