Bill develops a pressure area
Bill was a new resident who enjoyed sitting in the resident’s lounge area meeting and chatting to other residents and staff. His favourite position provided him with a good view of the room, and he always asked to be placed so that people would approach him from the right side of his body. He had suffered a stroke and he preferred people not to see the difficulty he had using his arm, as he had little movement on the left side of his body. While staff made sure he was well positioned and comfortable when he first went into the lounge, they noticed that his left arm would later slip from the arm rest and rub against the outside of the chair. This caused a pressure area to develop. When staff noticed the problem occurring, they talked to Bill about what could be done to make sure a pressure area didn’t develop again. Their solution was the placement of a pillow to correct the position of Bill’s arm, and protect it from falling against the arm of the chair. |
