Madeline's story
Madeline loved her daily massage. She found it relieved the pain she experienced from arthritis and she also enjoyed being touched – there were few opportunities for physical contact because her family all lived a long distance away. Each morning Vera would spend a few minutes massaging Madeline’s hands and chatting. It was an important time for both of them. When Vera went on leave, David continued the daily massage with Madeline. On the first day, David began massaging Madeline’s hand a little too roughly. She soon told him that it wasn’t the way Vera had done it and that it was hurting a bit. David was surprised to see that a red mark had appeared on her hand after a very short time. He apologised and was very gentle as he massaged her other hand. During his time at work, he regularly checked her hand to ensure that the red mark had gone away and asked if her hand was feeling okay. He reported what happened to his team leader and also reported at handover that Madeline’s hand had not retained the redness. |
