Azree's grandmother

"My grandmother was admitted to a residential aged care service after spending a long time in hospital. She was developing dementia. When we got there, we were really worried because she hadn’t wanted to leave her home. The service had a meeting with us all to tell us about what we should expect and how we could help, because she was very independent before she got sick.

They explained to us how they would help her with her feeding because sometimes she refused to eat, and that we could take her laundry home if we wanted. She had always been very proud of her appearance, but sometimes the clothes she wore now did not fit her very well. She also started to not let us change or wash her clothes, even though she was incontinent at times.

The staff explained to us the importance of her skin being kept clean and dry, and the importance of her clothes. If they were too tight or too loose they could rub on her skin. They also explained that if her skin was moist it could cause pressure areas – we did not know about that before they talked to us. We felt much better after that. We talked to the staff and they helped us to understand how we could help her and help them to care for her. We felt included."
