What should the resident's family and friends know about pressure areas?

Family and friends are often the people who sit with residents for long periods of time. They are in a good position to notice when residents are sitting or lying in one position for an extended period of time, or when they are showing some of the warning signs that were listed earlier. Let friends and family know that you and the other staff are available to discuss pressure area prevention. Also let them know that you would welcome their advice if they notice any of the warning signs.

Another reason for making sure that family and friends are aware of pressure area prevention, relates to their role in buying clothes, shoes, slippers and skin care products. If they are aware that tight or restrictive clothing and footwear can cause problems, they will be able to purchase appropriately for the resident. Points to remember about clothing and shoes:

  • Ensure clothing fits correctly — clothing should not be too tight or too loose. If clothing is too tight it can restrict circulation — if clothing is too loose it can mean that creases can occur under the resident.
  • Avoid clothing with thick seams.
  • Ensure that buttons and zips are appropriately placed, so that they do not put pressure on bony prominences.
  • Shoes need to be fitted correctly. Avoid ill-fitting shoes or slippers. Shoes with Velcro fastenings may be appropriate.

Similarly, make family and friends aware that some skin care products can cause skin irritation. With this knowledge, they can buy suitable products.
